Dear readers,
Today I took part in a debate. The topic at hand was as follows: This house would not lie about Santa Claus to their children. This basically means that one side believes parents should not lie about Santa Claus to their children, while the other side believes the parents SHOULD lie about Santa Claus.
Although there was a mixture of religions on the teams and we had minimal time to prepare, we pulled off a great debate. I was put on the OPP side. I had to argue that lying to kids about Santa Claus is the best way to go.
When I debate, I’m in a whole other zone. I talk to the point where I convince myself what I’m saying is right, even if I don’t believe it in general. For example, one time: I had to argue against vegetarianism when I AM a vegetarian. The key is exactly that, convincing yourself before you convince others.
Even though debating is deemed stereotypically nerdy, it’s not whatsoever. It teaches you skills you can’t get elsewhere. You sense your improvement before someone makes you aware of it. I encourage everyone out there to familiarize themselves with the art of debate, it will serve them well!
Get your debate on!
